About the Appalachian Heritage Council

The mission of the APPS Appalachian Heritage Council is to provide entertainment that reflects the story, history, and traditions of the Appalachian Region.

Some events Heritage puts on are the Foxire Mini Series such as blacksmithing, quilting, potery, and basket weaving. Other events include square dances, Fiddles n Fixins, and Appalachian folklore. Preservation of the traditions of the Appalachian Region is the focus of this council, and members will be asked to bring new and fresh ideas for entertainment as it relates to Appalachian heritage. We also love to collaborate with local businesses and people, so if you have an idea or would like to get more information, reach out to the advisor, Katie Brooks, at brookskd1@appstate.edu.

The flagship event for the APPS Appalachian Heritage Council is the annual Appalachian State University Old-Time Fiddlers Convention. Fiddler's Convention, or FidCon, is held on the campus of App State and is 100% student-operated. This unique two-day event draws over 400 attendees from nine states and celebrates the rich musical and cultural history of the Appalachian region. Events include, but certainly are not limited to: concerts, instructional workshops, music competitions, a gathering of luthiers, as well as a handmade market featuring crafters from across the region.
